5 Plumbing Facts

  1. Watch What You Flush Down the Toilet

It’s very important to know what is allowed and not allowed to flush down your toilet. You should only be flushing toilet paper and bodily waste down your toilet. Some commonly mistaken products that are not supposed to be flushed down your toilet include: hygiene products, cotton balls, prescription medications, and yes…unfortunately fish.  Having knowledge of what to flush and what not to flush will help keep your toilet functioning properly and will reduce the risk of clogging in the future!

  1. Garbage Disposal 101

Keeping your garbage disposal clean helps to avoid clogging. Most people don’t know what items can be a risk and not suitable to be put down your garbage disposal. Some of the most common items that should not go down the garbage disposal are coffee grounds, food debris, bacon grease, vegetable peelings, or starchy foods like rice or potatoes. These oils and food waste will build up inside of your pipes and can result in serious damage and clogging.

  1. Do Not Ignore Water Leaks

Checking for leaks regularly in your home is recommended because most leaks are not always easily visible. To start off, check your walls, ceilings, and cabinets to see if they have any discoloration or water damage. Also, a musty, mildew smell in basements, attics, or crawl spaces is a common sign of mold buildup, which is often the result of water leaks. By conducting proper preventative maintenance and detecting water leaks early, you can save a lot of time and money. In addition to time and money, water leaks and mold build-up can have a negative and dangerous long-term effect on your health.

  1. Prevent Water Damage in Cold Weather

With the winter months and chilling New England weather just around the corner, it’s common for pipes to freeze and even burst, which results in a lot of damage with a hefty price tag. Keep your home warm and safe this winter with these three tips to help prevent frozen or burst pipes:

  • Let Cold Water Drip from The Faucet
  • Keep Heat On
  • Keep Garage Doors Closed
  1. Get an Inspection From A Professional

Having a professional come in for preventative maintenance or inspection of your plumbing is crucial. Most homeowners are not professional and not everything can be fixed with a simple home project. A plumber may point out something that you might not have seen before or accidentally have ignored. Getting an inspection is a great start to build trust and a relationship with a plumber.
