Is Your Heating System Ready for Winter?

The leaves have touched down and our mornings give way to frost covered lawns.  Only one thing is left for us to expect – winter is coming.  Taking proactive steps now to ensure your home is ready for the winter chill will pay dividends for your home’s efficiency, your personal comfort, and your wallet.  Ensure your home will provide you with reliable warm air and comfort when you consider these factors.

  1. Consider the Systems You Have in Place

What type of heating/cooling systems do you have?  Home owners with radiant and baseboard heat should inspect their systems to ensure they are clean of dirt and debris and are unobstructed by furniture; all factors which reduce efficiency.

Is your AC ready for winter?  Consider covering your outside AC unit to protect it from harsh winter conditions.

Are your air vents functioning optimally?  Take time to examine your vents to see if air is able to pass through them easily.

Is your chimney or flue blocked?  An improperly functioning chimney or flue is not only inefficient, but it can also be a potential safety hazard.  Inspect chimneys all the way down to the base and check for cracks which give way to seepage of dangerous gases.

  1. Change Out Old Air Filters

Did you know that most HVAC systems cycle air through the same filter?  Your air filter has inevitably accumulated some grime after cranking day-in and day-out through the summer months.  Started off your heating system by swapping your old filter for a fresh one.  For maximum efficiency consider changing filters monthly.

  1. Check Your Thermostat

Give your thermostat a test run before you get caught in the cold.  If you turn up your thermostat and the air flow is not bringing the room to temperature, or, if the heat turns off before reaching the set temperature, it may be time to call for help.
